Choosing the right output: a W/m² guide

Choosing the right output: a W/m² guide

Output, measured in watts per square metre, decides how quickly a floor warms and how much heat loss it can overcome.

Start with the floor finish

Tiles and stone handle higher outputs. Timber, laminate, vinyl and carpet need lower outputs and a floor temperature limit, set with a floor sensor.

Then look at heat loss

A bathroom over an uninsulated slab, with an external wall and a large window, needs more output than an upstairs ensuite over a heated room.

  • 150 W/m²: most tiled bathrooms and kitchens
  • 200 W/m²: cold slabs, exposed rooms and faster warm-up
  • Up to 100 W/m²: floating timber and laminate
Heated area is not room area. Leave out spaces under vanities, baths, showers bases and fixed cabinets. The heated area is usually 70 to 85% of the room.
