Cold storage frost-heave protection

Low-output cable under freezer and cool-room floors keeps the ground beneath above freezing, preventing frost heave that cracks and lifts slabs.

In freezer rooms and cold stores the ground under the floor slowly freezes. Water in the soil expands and lifts the slab, cracking floors and moving columns. Low-output heating cable under the insulation keeps the ground above freezing. Insulation alone can't solve it.

Benefits and advantages

  • Eliminates the risk of frost heave and foundation damage
  • Protects the investment: the floor is the one part you can't repair while in use
  • Reduced energy loss and a power-saving solution
  • Space saving, with lower initial cost than alternatives
  • Lowest cost of ownership, with no environmental concerns
  • Safer working environment

System design starting points

  • Heating cable (DEVIflex 18T or DEVIbasic) in the base slab under the floor insulation
  • Keeps the soil just above 0 °C; the cold store itself runs at -20 to -30 °C
  • Controlled by a DEVIreg 330 (-10 to +10 °C range) with a sensor
  • Also used for door frames, gates and drain lines to stop ice forming

Other applications

Under-tile floor heating: floor build-up
Indoor

Under-tile floor heating

Thin heating mats or cables set in tile adhesive directly under the tiles. Fast to warm up, ideal for bathrooms, ensuites and kitchens in new builds and renovations.

In-screed and in-slab heating: floor build-up
Indoor

In-screed and in-slab heating

Heating cable laid in a sand-cement screed or concrete slab. The mass stores heat and releases it evenly, which suits whole-home heating and open-plan spaces.

Timber and floating floors: floor build-up
Indoor

Timber and floating floors

A dry system with no screed. Aluminium-topped plates spread heat from a low-output cable under floating timber, laminate or engineered boards.

Snow and ice melting
Outdoor

Snow and ice melting

Heating cables in driveways, ramps, stairs and paths keep surfaces clear of ice and snow. Sensors switch the system on only when it's cold and wet.

Roof and gutter de-icing: DEVI heating cable
Outdoor

Roof and gutter de-icing

Cables in gutters, valleys and downpipes stop ice dams and icicles forming, protecting the roof, gutters and people below.

Pipe frost protection: DEVI heating cable
Frost

Pipe frost protection

Self-limiting cable fixed along water pipes and under insulation stops them freezing and bursting in exposed or unheated locations.

Hot water temperature maintenance
Commercial

Hot water temperature maintenance

Keeps hot water pipes at temperature so hot water arrives quickly at every outlet, reducing water waste in large buildings.

Sports field heating
Commercial

Sports field heating

Cables laid below the turf keep the root zone and surface free of frost so pitches stay playable through winter.

Vineyards and horticulture
Agriculture

Vineyards and horticulture

Heating cables along the vine wire protect buds from spring frost. Also used for propagation beds and greenhouse soil warming.

Agriculture and livestock
Agriculture

Agriculture and livestock

Heating cables in soil, seed beds and animal floors protect crops, seedlings and livestock from frost and cold stress.
